Santa sightings

We have had a busy weekend of Santa sightings this weekend. Unfortunately, David and I are both under the weather so after every adventure, we have said, "Whoa, that was intense." But, we made it! We started out at the local Methodist church for Muffins with Santa yesterday. Audrey is starting at this church two days a week in January, and she is really excited to go to a school where she "has her own nap mat." (We'll see how that works out...)
We have learned to get places early with wee ones, so we arrived about 15 minutes before the doors opened. They had a variety of muffins set out and tons of crafts to entertain the kids until they had their turn with Santa. Then, we had a little storytime about the true story of Christmas. Now, we all know I love Jesus, but Kathryn doesn't always love storytime, so I was sweating by the time it was over. She had already wallowed all over their stuffed sheep and just about knocked over the camel, when we finally heard the "ho, ho, ho."
Audrey was delighted to see Santa and tell him she wanted "a pogo stick." This girl saw an Elmo episode about pogo sticks about two years ago and STILL talks about it. Not sure how we are going to deal with one...

Here, he is telling her she will have to be careful. She said, "Yes, I know, Santa." So wise...

Kathryn had very little to say to Santa, but let me tell you, he held that baby for a hot second and passed her right on back to momma. Perhaps crying babies is Mrs. Claus' department?

We also went to a parade yesterday afternoon and got the girls off schedule with their naps. These girls like a schedule like their momma, so we paid for it last night. This was an attempt at a post church shot. Audrey was awake from 11-1:30 last night and Kathryn took over from 2-3:30, so needless to say, we are all in need of a nap. Sorry I didn't crop out the orchestra chairs - I am still tired! Merry, merry, folks.

Progression of a Tea Party

The girls had their first official "tea" party tonight (12/6/12). It was a classic American tea party, complete with pretend milk, pizza and french fries. We spoke in our best English accents and called each other "Betsy" (a new tradition that Audrey and I have started during our tea times.)
These pictures show a great time lapse of events...

Audrey is complaining about the flash, Kathryn is stealing her cup.

Audrey is still complaining, Kathryn is going for her pizza.

She got it! (And Audrey never caught on) Crafty girl, that Kathryn!

Post tea-time, Kathryn showed us her favorite move. She is standing on her own for a few weeks now, and this is one of her favorite poses. It cracks us up. Yoga, anyone?

Advent

A few Advent Activities - David and I were far more into the house than Audrey. Her favorite part was eating the candy.

Pretty sure I was saying, "See, like this..."

See? Candy thief!

Let's be honest - our end result probably wasn't that different had we just let her be completely in charge!

Fruit Loop garland - starting strong

gave Kathryn a muffin tin to sort the cereal

Audrey thought that looked like more fun.

End of the garland - a garland for a very small tree

And, what advent doesn't include some ballet dancing?

Got to be like big sister

Love our sweet babies!

Good and Faithful Servant

My sweet Aunt Lois went to be with the Lord last night. "Well done my good and faithful servant." What a blessing she was in all of our lives.

Gingerbread

I found a great recipe for homemade gingerbread play dough that is a cinch to make. The girls loved digging into it. Of course, Kathryn found it difficult to not eat it all, but we managed to redirect her most of the time.
Audrey loved creating pancakes and snakes. The girl's imagination is alive!

Thanksgiving Adventures, Part 3

Our gathering on Friday was at Aunt Lois' retirement community, in their community room. Aunt Lois isn't really up to traveling anymore, so I was thankful that we could come to her. On this particular day, she wasn't particularly able to speak much so I figured the best thing is just to sing. Audrey was happy to perform some songs for the lady that she prays for nightly, so we sang our best versions of "Deep and Wide", "This Little Light of Mine" and "Jingle Bells".
Aunt Lois has always had a heart for children, and though she never had any biological children, there are many that see her as a mother. In fact, I'm pretty sure that she probably taught a lot of other children these familiar songs.
Though she couldn't speak much that day, I hope that she knows how much she is loved. Some of my best childhood memories were at her house: cooking fried chicken for lunch (always with biscuits AND cornbread) in a silver bowl, shopping at Belk's, eating salt-covered watermelon under the big tree out back, and feeding the cats under the shed. She hosted a huge family Christmas gathering for years, and I remember loving all of the stories that were told in that house.
I think it's important for children to know that they are part of a larger story in this world, that they have family that have gone before them and prepared a way for them. I am thankful for Aunt Lois and the beautiful example of godly mothering that she represents to all of us.

Thanksgiving Adventures, Part 2

On Wednesday, we continued onto SC to visit my family. This is our biggest holiday with extended family, as everyone travels back to eat some turkey together.

Audrey was thrilled to find a playground right outside of the fellowship hall.
We took the opportunity to take some family pics. This is Uncle Gary's family: Wallace, Betty, Cindy, Gary, Linda, Jennifer, Jeff, and Marilyn.
